Coronado High School Multi-media Teacher Chris McClung Interviewed by High School Journalist Dan Mader

Dan Mader: “Ms.McClung, how did you first become involved in the Heroes in Training program?”

Chris McClung: “Well, I became involved because of my friend, Dr. Wright, she had been approached about a year ago by Ralph Zuranski, about the “Heroes in Training Program.” And, she was involving her journalism students in that program. And then about eight months ago, we started a new pilot program at Coronado High School that was based on our re-structuring efforts at the school.”

Chris McClung: “And, the pilot program was a class, which would integrate journalism, video, graphic arts and dramatic skills, and so I was involved in that.  It was supposed to show us what our communications academy would look like in the future, and we based the project that they would be working on in groups on Ralph's Heroes In Training Program.”

Chris McClung: “So we had about four groups, and they each chose a hero and interviewed them.  They did a videotape with the Hero, and they created a wonderful magazine, featuring their heroes, and they also put articles in The Eagle about the heroes, so we did everything we could with that particular project.  It was a wonderful project, and I think it worked out very, very well.”

Dan Mader: Okay, you mentioned that the program is just a little over a year old, so it's still, let's say, in the early stages.  What do you think the potential of a program like this is?

Chris McClung: “Well, we certainly see that it's working very nicely in Coronado.  It's in infancy still.  Not everybody knows about it in the community, but more and more people are learning about it.  Our students at Coronado, especially the journalism students and the video students, all know about the program and have participated in it on different levels of participation. But, certainly, I think it's one of those things that can grow and grow.  I can foresee this being in anybody's city, in any school. So hopefully, it will grow, and I know that Mr. Zuranski is talking to sponsors and so forth, and so I'm hoping that it will appear everywhere.”
