Imagine what would happen if we focused
on the good people do...

"Who Else Wants to Change the World By Teaching Young People To Discover Their Own Heroic Potential?"

by Ralph Zuranski

Who could have imagined the 1993 Coronado "In Search Of Heroes Program" would have such a beneficial impact on society? It created an entirely new, revolutionary social perspective on “What is real heroism?”

The goal was to to help young people realize they have heroic potential and that the real unsung heroes in society are the moms, dads, grandparents, teachers, coaches, spiritual leaders and local entrepreneurs who make a positive difference in their lives...one day at a time. There is no question our military, police, firemen who protect our way of life, are also heroes.

Coronado visionaries Larry Wade and Dean Eckenroth from the Eagle Newspaper, Dr. Jeff Davis, Dr. Margaret Wright, Diane Peruse and Chris McClung from Coronado High School, Ron and Vicki Beaubien, Ron Tretiak, Bill Sandke, Steve McMahon from Coronado Cable Vision, Ken Roe, Manager at Peohe’s Restaurant, Jim Laslavic from KNSD TV and members of the Coronado Chamber of Commerce and Rotary joined forces to teach the high school journalism and multi-media classes the true meaning of heroism.

This may have been the beginning of the the social heroes movement that is sweeping the country today. USA Today recently featured a front page article titled "Volunteer Rates Hit Record Numbers!" Newsweek just published an expose on social volunteerism in their article “The Giving Back Awards.”

Ralph Zuranski, creator of the “In Search Of Heroes Program,” attended the 37th San Diego Comic Convention as his alter-ego hero character Captain Biorhythm. The goal was to search for real life heroes at the event he could photograph and interview for the Coronado Eagle-Journal Newspaper.

This was to be his victory tour that began in 1993 when he took cub reporters to the 24th Comic Con to have them interview the world’s greatest comic book writers, artists and publishers. The first two heroes-in-training, David Ganong and Laura Neale, participated in Jim Shooter’s Defiant Comics “Good Guys” Comic Book Contest. The goal was to create comic book characters based on the lives of real young people.

Laura Neale actually was one of the winners. Her character was named “Flex.” She proved to be a real heroine after her back was horribly broken when her car was hit by a drunk driver at the intersection that was the epicenter of the Northridge Earthquake at 4:30 am, on January 17, 1994.

After 12 hours of surgery to place two steel rods on either side of her spine, she was placed in a body cast and required to walk one hour each day without any pain medication. A couple weeks later, Laura appeared at the “Good Guys Comic Book Kickoff at Mile High comic store on November 27th. She missed the gala event at “Disneyland” the day before because of the severe pain, but refused to stay home when she knew her fans were expecting “Flex” to sign autographs.

A couple of months later, while still in her body cast, Laura’s family were terrified by the Northridge Earthquake, but survived without serious injury. As TVs flew across the room and dressers toppled over, spilling the clothes on the floor, Laura was not concerned about herself…only her family.

The Coronado journalism and multi-media were so impressed with this family’s triumph over their incredible ordeals, they interviewed the entire family at Peohe’s Restaurant. Jason Bean from Coronado Cable Vision was kind enough to videotape the entire interview. The questions posed by the students were thoughtful and often times difficult. The answers were emotional and in many cases astounding.

Many of the students experienced an epiphany. They realized the real heroes are family members, next door neighbors, teachers, coaches, spiritual leaders and often young people their own age. Their interviews of the stars of Baywatch and Jonathan Frakes, Commander Riker of Star Trek the Next Generation, clearly proved this point.

Gregory Alan Williams, a African American policeman on Baywatch and real life hero, saved a man’s life during the LA Riots. He really nailed the definition of a hero when he said, “There is a little bit of good in the worst of us. There is a little bit of bad in the best of us. When we reach out to help someone else, in that moment, we are heroes. The real heroes are those who help others quietly, without any fanfare or publicity, every day of their lives.”

Ralph Zuranski and Captain Biorhythm were both encouraged by what they discovered the the San Diego Comic Convention. It was now a family event governed by “PG Standards…safe and enjoyable for the entire family.

Even the US Post Office along with DC Comics jumped on the superhero bandwagon with the first issue of superhero stamps. Even Mayor Sanders showed up for the official unveiling of the gorgeous stamp collection.

Comic book writers, artists and publishers were focusing on strong, positive, powerful messages that encourage honesty, integrity, ethics, morality, courage, self-sacrifice, innovation and perseverance. The Sci Fi TV Channel teamed up with Nash Entertainment to produce a reality show, “Who Wants To Be A Superhero?” The focus is on real humans doing good things for others and working to become a better person.

The ABC Family channel is producing a TV series named, “Fallen,” based on the hit books by Tom Sniegoski. It is a classic battle of good versus evil that chronicles the phenomenal journey of an 18-year old who struggles to come to terms with his newly discovered identity. He is drawn into a world where angels---good and evil---walk among us.

During the panel, Paul Wesley, shared how angels saved his life right before a car crash. He woke up from a deep sleep and felt impelled to put on his seat belt.  5 minutes later, his friend lost control and the car rolled 8 times. He believes that if his guardian angel had not intervened, he would have died in the wreck.

Deepak Chopra and his son Gotham, Grant Morrison and Larry Lieberman in their comic book series “Virgin” promoted the idea superheroes should inspire people to evolve to the next level of peace and spirituality. Deepak and Grant, in their panel discussion, stated that the new generation of heroes should exhibit the qualities of love, passion, courage, compassion, self-lessness, emotional stability, creativity and intuition. They should be able to transform themselves and others in a good way, have the power of intention and transcend their own weaknesses.

NBC-Universal Studio is producing “Heroes,” an epic drama that tells the stories of the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities. Their stories focus on important social issues like drug addiction, fractured families and overcoming the evil that is working to destroy our world.

The TV programs and movies like Batman, Superman, Spiderman, the X-Men are sending a message of courage and social responsibility. The TV, movie studios and comic artists, writers and publishers are to be applauded in their efforts to inspire young people to make a positive difference in their local communities.

The only effective solutions to social problems are those created by the residents who are intimately involved and understand what is needed…community activitism. The media is finally delivering uplifting news about good people making a positive difference in the lives of their neighbors.

After 1 4 years, the “In Search Of Heroes Program” official “Heroes-In-Training Course” will be available in September 2006 in Coronado. Some of the original visionaries have volunteered to take program and community to the next level of success.

After four years of interviewing over 40 of the richest and most successful entrepreneurial heroes, Ralph discovered that Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” was the one most important book that helped them achieve their dreams. Ralph purchased the book and read it cover to cover. He searched for and found a “public domain” copy that he updated and transformed into a superlearning extravaganza.

Napoleon Hill said Andrew Carnegie believed that if young people were taught his secrets, their time in school would be cut in half. Having a community “Master Mind” group is the most powerful force for creating incredible success.

The eighteen week course will involve a complete reading of the book with the help of a glorious PowerPoint presentation using beautiful scenes from nature and physics. It will be free and open to Coronado residents, students and their family members. Space will be limited. Sign up instructions will appear in the Eagle-Journal in August.

Come learn the two secrets that were never revealed in the “Think and Grow Rich” books that are currently available on the market. These two secrets are so mind-boggling and earth-shattering…no wonder they were surgically removed for the printed versions.

Humanity hangs in the balance. Come learn why spreading “good news” and focusing on positive thoughts is more important now than ever before. If we don’t take Napoleon Hill’s secret advice, your dreams may never become reality.

"Read the Original Article That Created The First 'In Search Of Heroes™' Program In The Coronado Eagle Newspaper"

by Ralph Zuranski

What is a Hero or Heroine?

How does one arrive at this exalted position? According to "Big Brain," my talking "Franklin Language Master," the attributes are the same for both sexes. Heroes are individuals admired for their achievements and qualities. They especially demonstrate the courage to conquer fear or despair. Where are the Heroes of today, when the world needs them so desperately?

Are we the audience and the major news media equally responsible for the lack of publicity for Heroes?

Have you ever wondered, "Why is there such a focus on traumatic, violent and frightening events?" Does a steady diet of this material perpetuate fear and despair?

Do we experience a vicarious thrill from the misfortune of others?

Are our senses dulled, ethics corrupted and morals so jaded we require greater quantities of violence and shocking events to stimulate our interest? I still remember when one murder caused social outrage and community activism!

Too many people today are apprehensive, frightened by things beyond the edges of perception.

They are afraid of many things. Riots, wars, terrorist acts and natural catastrophes are increasing in frequency and intensity.

Physical and emotional abuse, chronic diseases, financial failure affect every family to different degrees.

The consequences of unremitting fear just don't go away by themselves. The quality of life decreases dramatically when all hope is lost. Something positive must be done. A solution is to locate and publicize real-life Heroes in these fearful and perilous times.

The tremendous need for inspiration and positive role models increases exponentially with each horrific act and devastating event.

Experts believe a factor of ten times as much positive stimulus is required to overcome one negative event.

How many people are desirous of reading and seeing uplifting articles about people triumphing over human trials, tribulations and misery?

Are there any real-life Heroes laboring to help solve the immense social and environmental problems facing humanity?

I believe the answer is an emphatic yes! Heroes are everywhere!

They are ordinary people determined to serve and help others; to make the world a better place. Daily, across the face of the earth, people willingly assist family members, friends, and strangers.

They compassionately minister to the injured, poor and sick.

They Help Enthusiastically, Responsibly, Optimistically, Exceptionally and Socially (HEROES), with no fanfare, demand for recognition or public acclaim. These humble people of every race demonstrate the loftiest qualities of humanity.

Hopefully the news media will publish and broadcast these stories. The goals of the program will be to:

  • Identify and praise local Heroes.

  • Educate people about Heroes and heroic action.

  • Inspire young people to want to become Heroes.

  • Help young writers and photographers develop and perfect their writing skills.

  • Receive published credit for their writing, art and photo contributions.

Extensive research has proven individuals often meet or exceed their own and other's expectations.

When children envision themselves as Heroes, heroic action is not far behind. Public recognition and concrete rewards for excellence are a wonderful incentive for young people. Every person can benefit by creating a Hero or Heroine within, to help them deal with the difficulties of life.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

The creators of the "In Search Of Heroes Program" have the desire to inspire young children to dream, to imagine themselves Heroes. These people are working hard to create vehicles for the dreams of teenagers to become reality. As in the book "Dune," the dreamers must awaken. People need to believe they can make their dreams for global peace, joy, prosperity and love a universal experience. The heroic example of others is a prerequisite.

"I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know; the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve." Dr. Albert Schweitzer.

"The 'In Search Of Heroes™' Internet Marketing Training Course will revolutionize the learning experience for students."

The interviews of the copywriting and internet marketing super stars will be transformed into a course that includes the videos, audios and text. The material will be presented in multiple learning formats so each person can benefit from the information presented in the way that stimulates and enhances their ability to learn. We will use mind-maps and brain balancing images and colors that appeal to how boys and girls brains and left and right hemispheres process information differently. These advanced techniques of teaching will insure, "No child is left behind!"
